Music and Worship at Church of the Saviour
Worship and Music at Church of the Saviour
Music is considered an important and integral part of the Episcopal worship tradition at Church of the Saviour. Our music currently might be described as traditional, drawing from the primary source of the Episcopal, Anglican and wider Christian church traditions for both anthems and hymnody. Mostly contemporary anthems are sung by the choir with a few traditional anthems as well. In the future, the church would like to incorporate modern music such as praise music.
The primary worship service on Sunday morning is the Holy Eucharist, Rite II form the Book of Common Prayer. Generally, four hymns are sung at the principle service. Service music varies on a seasonal basis, includes Gloria or Kyrie (in Lent), a sung Sanctus and a sung fraction anthem. On Palm Sunday and Easter, the psalm appointed for the day is sung.
The Choir
The choir at Church of the Saviour is currently comprised of eight (8) volunteer members of the congregation. Most of the choir can sight read music well while a few learn their parts in one or two run through. At present, there are 3-4 sopranos, 3-4 altos, 1 tenor and 1 bass. The choir vests and sings at the principal 10am Sunday service from September through June and on Holy Days such as the 11pm Christmas Eve service, Palm Sunday, Easter, etc. throughout the liturgical year. During July and August usually soloists or a few choir members assemble on Sunday morning for the 10am Holy Eucharist.
It is the hope that the new music director will be able to recruit more members to be part of the choir.
The choir assists the congregational singing of hymns and service music and prepares an anthems sung during the offertory. From September through June, choir rehearsals are held on Thursday evening from 7:00pm to 8:30pm.
The Children’s Choir
In the past, roughly three to four times a year, the children of the parish are invited to join together to prepare an anthem for Sunday worship. This is usually done when there is a children’s service. Also, they sing at the 4pm Christmas Eve service. Generally, a simple tune has been chosen and practiced for a few Sundays leading up to the performance.
There is hope that we might develop this group over time to be more active in the parish worship by expanding the ranks and developing the children’s musical abilities to tackle more challenging works.
